$1,000 college scholarship named for the late SYC Volunteer
On Thursday, the Springfield/South County Youth Club (SYC) Board of Directors approved funding for the George Angulo Scholarship Award. The $1,000 college scholarship will be awarded annually to an area high school senior with a history of volunteer service. This deadline to apply for the 2017 award is March 31, 2017.
The scholarship was named for George Angulo, a longtime SYC volunteer, who served as Coach, Deputy Commissioner, and on the SYC Board of Directors. George passed away suddenly in July of 2016.
“At SYC we try to create a culture which fosters leadership on and off the field,” said SYC Board Chair Chris Spera. “When we decided to create this scholarship which awards students-athletes for volunteerism, George was immediately top of mind. His legacy of service to others is one that should be emulated and will remain visible through this initiative.”
For more than 54 years, the Springfield/South County Youth Club (SYC) has provided athletic programs for boys and girls ages 4 to 19 that promote character development, good sportsmanship, and exemplary behavior. Currently SYC offers ten sports to choose from; Basketball, Cheerleading, Field Hockey, Football, Lacrosse, Rugby, Soccer, Softball, Track/Cross Country, and Volleyball. SYC processes approximately 10,000 registrations per year with over 4,500 families participating.

“A good coach takes his love for the game and instills it in you. He molds you into the player he sees inside of you and watches your talent and dedication grow into a skill that you both can be proud of. His payoff is the smile he sees on your face after you have reached your goal. His drive are the tears you cry because you want it so bad knowing he had the same feeling inside him too. Make him proud and never give less than your best. You both deserve it.”
