PLEASE READ BEFORE REVIEWING DRILLS VIDEOS
At SYC Basketball, we are fortunate to have many willing volunteers, but a significant number of those volunteers have repeatedly expressed that they feel as if they lack sufficient basketball knowledge to properly coach our children. Over the years, we have tried to come up with an effective, convenient and cost effective way to provide assistance with basketball instruction to our volunteer coaches. We have at various times considered and implemented coaching clinics, sessions with outside instructors, purchasing instructional materials and other methods to provide support for our volunteer coaches. However, after trying all of those methods, it is our hope that this series of videos will best serve the needs of our coaches, now and going forward.

These videos provide an easily accessible series of drills and points of emphasis to help SYC’s volunteer coaches develop practice plans and teaching techniques for their teams. Unlike a coaching clinic or instructional session, they can be reviewed at the coach’s convenience any number of times. They are the product of many years of playing, coaching and administering basketball at the youth, high school and college level. This is not intended to be a comprehensive training video. Rather, what we have attempted to do is stress some fundamental concepts in ball handling, shooting, passing and defense to give examples of what we believe are good drills for a variety of skill levels. Coaches are free to expand upon these ideas; the key is that the core concepts are stressed in whatever practice regimen is used.

The videos are in QuickTime format; there is a link to a free download of the QuickTime player if it is not already on your computer. There is an introduction and a series of drills on four subjects: passing, ball handling, defense and shooting. By clicking on the link for each subject, you will pull up a QuickTime player with a menu of related drills on the left side of the viewing area. The player will start playing the introduction to the subject matter as a default. After the introduction, you can review each of the drills by clicking on the appropriate spot on the menu. You must return to the SYC Basketball Page to switch from one subject to another; for example, if you have finished reviewing the ball handling drills and want to review the shooting drills, you have to click “Back” on your browser until you get to the SYC Basketball page again, then click on the “Shooting Technique” link.

The instructors and demonstrators are not professionals, but people from the SYC Basketball community who donated their time to this effort. While we had excellent technical support from the production staff at WebTVonDemand.com and great facilities courtesy of Velocity Sports Performance, the content of this product is the result of volunteer efforts. Please keep that in mind as you review the content.

We hope this is helpful to our coaches and players. Good luck!
