SYC SUMMER HOUSE BASKETBALL REGISTRATION NOW OPEN

The Springfield/South County Youth Club is please to once again sponsor its summer house basketball league for boys and girls age 10-18.  You may register for this program on the SYC home page.  Cost is $75 per player.  The program is expected to start June 30 and end August 7, subject to gym availability.  A numbered uniform shirt is provided to all participants.

SYC summer basketball differs from our winter program in a number of significant ways:

  • The program is for children ages 10 and older - we do not get gym space in the smaller gyms with lower baskets to allow us to offer programs for younger players.
  • Summer league age groups combine several ages together due to a smaller number of players - our winter program often has single year age groups.  This summer, we expect our age groups to be as follows:
    • Boys 10-12
    • Boys 13-15
    • Boys 16-18
    • Girls 10-12
    • Girls 13-18
    • Actual age groups will depend on enrollment.
  • Teams are formed by league director based on even allocation of players based on age - there is no draft due to time constraints.
  • Each team will be assigned several practice times at the beginning of the season, then play two games per week thereafter for an expected total of 9 games per team.  All games will be on weeknights - no Friday or weekend games.
  • While the schedule is not yet prepared, every effort will be made to have each age group play on the same evenings and in the same gyms though out the season - for example, last summer, Boys 13-15 played at South County Secondary School on Tuesdays and Thursdays for most of the season, unless gym availability forced a change.
Please contact SYC Basketball Commissioner Chris Spera at cspera@mindspring.com or SYC Office Manager Carolyn Brennan at CarolynBrennan@sycva.com with any questions.
REVISED SPRING OPEN GYM SCHEDULE
SYC Basketball is pleased to continue its program of Spring open gyms for its members.  At this time, we are offering open gym programs for 9u boys (Current 4th graders), 11u Boys (Current 6th graders), 12u boys (Current 7th graders) and starting April 29 11-13 Girls (Current 6th, 7th and 8th graders) . More age groups may become available as we locate volunteers for them - if your age group is not represented, it is because  we do not have a volunteer to run the gym. Current schedule is as follows:

Boys 9u - Wednesdays at Lynbrook School from 7:15 -8:45

Boys 11u - Wednesdays at Garfield School from 7:15-8:45

Boys 12u - Thursdays at Lynbrook School from 7:15-8:45.

NEW - Girls Ages 11-13 - Tuesdays at Lynbrook School from 7:15-8:45

Each time slot is supervised by experienced coaches and will involve drills and scrimmages. There is no cost to participants for open gym.

Please contact SYC Basketball Commissioner Chris Spera with any questions.
CONDUCT ON SCHOOL PROPERTY: Parents, please remember that we are guests at the schools we are allowed to use for the basketball league.  Do not bring food or non-water beverages into the gyms.  Do not allow siblings/guests to roam around the school halls.  Respect the grounds of the school.  We can lose our privileges if we do not follow these simple rules.

VOLUNTEER BUILDING DIRECTOR STATUS:  Each coach should complete the simple on-line tutorial and test to obtain Fairfax County Volunteer Building Director status.  This process is required by the County and ensures that each coach has completed the process that certifies that you have reviewed the rules for gym use.  A link to this on-line tutorial and test is posted in the "Related Links" box in the upper left hand corner of this page.
PLEASE READ BEFORE REVIEWING DRILLS VIDEOS
At SYC Basketball, we are fortunate to have many willing volunteers, but a significant number of those volunteers have repeatedly expressed that they feel as if they lack sufficient basketball knowledge to properly coach our children. Over the years, we have tried to come up with an effective, convenient and cost effective way to provide assistance with basketball instruction to our volunteer coaches. We have at various times considered and implemented coaching clinics, sessions with outside instructors, purchasing instructional materials and other methods to provide support for our volunteer coaches. However, after trying all of those methods, it is our hope that this series of videos will best serve the needs of our coaches, now and going forward.
