FAIRFAX COUNTY ATHLETIC SERVICES - CHAMPIONS OF CHARACTER AWARDS PROGRAM

The Fairfax County Champions of Character Awards program honors youth, coaches and parents for extraordinary service in pursuing victory with honor on and off the field of competition. Instituted by the Fairfax County Athletic Council, this program aims to support the ennobling tradition of amateur athletics in cultivating teamwork, leadership, good sportsmanship and community service.

Awards are presented to a male and female athlete, coach and parent in each supervisory district for having demonstrated extraordinary service in the athletic community while modeling the basic traits of good character: Respect, Responsibility, Caring, Trustworthiness, Citizenship and Fairness.

Help SYC continue to honor volunteers and athletes for this very special award!

2021 MALE ATHLETE: Nicholas Bailey

Nicholas Bailey is an 8th grader who has been with the SYC Track program for a number of years. As the Head Coach of VA House of Speed, I have had the pleasure of meeting and coaching Nicholas (Nick) this past year in 2021 and it has been nothing less than extraordinary. Nicholas’s dedication, commitment and integrity is inspiring to me as a coach and to his teammates both on the SYC Rec Track Program, but especially on the Travel Track team – VA House of Speed. “Actions speak louder than words” should be Nick’s mantra. While he is initially shy, when around his teammates, his work ethic and willingness to listen and learn is a coaches’ dream. He naturally exudes respect from his teammates. This was further exemplified in his willingness to accept the challenge of moving from a 100m runner, to a 200m and 400m runner. He worked diligently and his teammates saw this pay off as he qualified in his first attempt for the AAU National Track Championships and came back with a Personal record in the 200 and one of his best times in the 400. Nick is a true joy to coach and emotes personal integrity amongst his teammates. I cannot imagine anyone more deserving of the SYC Spirit award.
