Guidelines for Using County Athletic Fields

  • Please have a copy of the County’s field permit with you at all times during practices.
  • Grass fields should not be practiced on if they have standing water or are "squishy" to the touch.
  • For park fields (such as Rolling Valley West, South Run, etc.), Coaches or Team Parents need to call 703-324-5264 for updates on field closures.
  • If someone is on a field when we have a permit for it, nicely ask them to leave for the sake of safety. If they refuse, show them a copy of the permit and let them know you have no choice but to call the county field monitors at 703-324-5515, and if necessary the police at 703-691-2131 (please use this non-emergency number).
  • Here are more guidelines from CRS when organized groups are still using the field when our permits begin:

"Please take a minute to read below and review or familiarize yourself with the proper procedures you should take in case you arrive at your scheduled facility and it is not available due to another group’s use extending past their permitted time. Some schedule conflicts ... have resulted in incidents that, without proper intervention, could have compromised the safety and security of participants.

Remember that a permit does not guarantee you access to a facility prior to the start time noted on your permit. For example, if your permit begins at 7:00, another group may be scheduled until 7:00. However, if another group is still using the field or gym at your assigned time, follow this procedure:

-Do not interrupt play.

-Try to identify an individual associated with the group that is not on the field of play, such as a coach or spectator. Ask about the status of the game and inform them that the facility is reserved for your group.

-If the group disputes the schedule or does not vacate the facility, call the CRS after-hours contact number: 703-324-5515. A recording will direct you to contact the specific facility monitor on duty that day.

-If the CRS monitor cannot resolve the issue over the phone, a monitor will be dispatched directly to the site. Nine monitors are always on duty throughout the county, so one should arrive shortly. In case of serious issues, CRS works closely with Fairfax County Police and Fairfax County Public Schools Security and can engage their support if necessary.

-Always have a copy of your permit with you in order to efficiently resolve any disputes about allocated time.

Again, do not try to force groups off of facilities yourself. Please involve the CRS facility monitors by calling 703-324-5515. Our staff are ready to assist you.

Please make sure to review these guidelines with your organization’s participants, coaches, parents, and officials.

If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact us atAthleticServices@fairfaxcounty.gov. Thank you for your continued participation and contributions to Fairfax County athletics."
