The SYC Track and Field program concluded on June 2 with the first annual Medal Mile event. This memorable event held at South County High School was enjoyable and well attended. Athletes were divided by age, and each group completed running a full mile. All participants were treated to a commemorative medal and Kool Pops as they crossed the finish line. It was great to see many parents join-in on the fun as they ran alongside their kids. Pool noodle relays and a water balloon toss added to the excitement and door prizes provided by Metro Run and Walk were handed out at the end of the day. It was a wonderful way to close the SYC Track and Field season, our 50th anniversary inaugural sport.
Coach Chris Pellegrini, the track and field coach at West Springfield High School, deserves recognition for the numerous hours and expertise he devoted to implementing the winter conditioning and spring track programs. We appreciate Chris as well as his assistant coach Brad and the many student volunteers from WSHS’s track and field program. Antoine Ross and other SYC parent volunteers also made it a great season and Antoine has agreed to take on the position of commissioner next season.
Our Track and Field program sponsor Metro Run and Walk is very excited to partner with us and will continue into the next season and beyond. We hope to see everyone back again for winter conditioning and after experiencing the success of this new sport, we are confident we‘ll see some new athletes joining us next season!
