Centreville, Va.

On a hot and humid August morning, SYC’s U-13/U-15 tackle team solidly defeated the SYA Cardinals 54-26 to successfully defend the Challenge Cup. SYC has never lost a Challenge Cup match in five matches dating back to August 2001. This match was the first to feature tackle rugby.

SYC drew first blood with two unconverted tries by Kessler Brown, but SYA bounced back with two converted tries. Hayden Angulo scored another unconverted try, and SYC took a 15-14 lead as the 1st quarter ended. In the 2nd quarter, Brown and Ben Tobias each scored unconverted tries for SYC, while SYA put up one of their own. Halftime score: SYC 25, SYA 19.

Scoring for SYC were Peyton Davey, Ben Tobias, Michael Bursley, and Matt Rose, with Tobias converting two. In the 4th quarter, the teams traded tries, with Andrew Cormode scoring for SYC. Final score: SYC 54, SYA 26.
