When searching for a clinic to attend, we are in the North Region, and you are looking for the New Referee Type Clinic.

There are two different grades of referee that you can become certified at. Those are listed below:

1. Grade 8 - This clinic requires 20 hours of classroom instruction, so it is held over a course of a few days, or even over several weeknights. Once you complete this course and pass the certification test you are ready to act as a Center Referee, or Assistant Referee within the recommended assigning guidelines set forth by US Soccer.

2. Grade 9 - this clinic requires class time as well (9-12 hours depending on size of the class). Once you complete this course and pass the certification test you are ready to act as an Assistant Referee primarily, but may be moved to the Center Referee position on the younger age groups within the Recreational/House level of soccer as you become more comfortable out on the field.

If you have any questions throughout this process, please contact mw Sharon: Sharon.deplitch@verizon.net

Once you have attended the Certification Clinic and passed the test you will need to obtain the Official US Soccer Referee Uniform (as listed on www.ussoccer.com).

You will also need to contact me at sharon.deplitch@verizon net to get placed on the email and mail distribution lists. That will ensure that you receive vital information about upcoming referee events as well as be updated on the process for getting assignments, officiating matches, etc.

A local contact that can help you with obtaining the uniform and any additional accessories, is Badger Sports. Their website is www.badger-sports.com. You can contact them through the email address or any contact numbers on their website. You can also browse their catalogs by downloading them from their website.

New referees should work recreational games for their first season to gain confidence, experience and a working knowledge of how the system works.

We look forward to having you working with us out on the pitch!!!!

Frequently Asked Questions on Becoming a Referee
Q. How do I become a referee?
A. Prospective referees must attend and pass a course sponsored and taught by the United States Soccer Federation (USSF).

Q. How much does a course cost?
A. A new referee for either Grade-8 or Grade-9 costs $65.

Q. What’s the difference between a Grade-8 and a Grade-9?
A. A Grade 8, USSF Referee Class 2, is authorized to referee competitive (travel) soccer matches as well as recreational (house) games. A Grade-8 course will qualify a referee to be both a Center Referee and Assistant Referee (often erroneously referred to as linesman). A Grade-9, USSF Recreational Referee, is authorized to referee on recreational games age under-14 and younger. Like a Grade-8, a Grade-9 will be qualified to be a Center or AR.

Q. How long is the course?
A. Generally a Grade-8 course is 18-20 hours while a Grade-9 course is 8-10 hours in length. A typical model for a Grade-8 course would be to meet on two consecutive Friday evenings and two full-day Saturday sessions. A Grade-9 course may meet for one long day or three evening sessions. Every course will be different.
