About SYC

Welcome to Springfield/South County Youth Club

How We Operate: The Springfield/South County Youth Club is a volunteer organization supported by a small paid staff consisting of the Office General Manager, Office Deputy General Manager, Bilingual Administrative Assistant, and Operations Assistant. The governing body of the club is its Board of Directors of which there are 15 elected to three-year terms. Additionally, SYC utilizes hundreds of volunteers year round who contribute countless hours to our programs. It is our dedicated volunteers who truly reflect the heart and soul of our club.

Funding: SYC is a 501(c3) non-profit organization solely funded through membership fees and donations.

Our Humble Beginnings: In 1958, Paul C. Westlein organized the first youth football team in the Springfield area. In subsequent years additional teams were formed and other sports programs like basketball were developed. In August of 1962, Paul founded the Springfield Boys Club and it became a chartered member of the Boys Club of America. The Springfield Boys Club became Springfield Youth Club (SYC) in 1977. In May of 2007, Springfield Youth Club’s membership voted overwhelmingly to change the name of the club to Springfield/South County Youth Club. The name change was in response to the club’s need to correctly reflect the demographic areas we serve due to our extensive growth over the years. SYC is proud of our past and grateful to Paul Westlein for his exceptional foresight over 50 years ago.

SYC Today: SYC currently offers ten exciting sports to choose from; Basketball, Cheerleading, Field Hockey, Football, Lacrosse, Rugby, Soccer, Softball, Track/Cross Country, and Volleyball. SYC processes approximately 10,000 registrations per year with over 4,500 families participating. All kids ages 4 – 19 are encouraged to participate in our youth sports programs.
