Rugby players love to play in the rain, but until we own our own fields we have to follow the Fairfax County Park Authority’s decision about field closures.
If the weather looks iffy during the week, please check the FCPA fields hotline at 703-324-5264 or their web site. Updated each weekday by 3:00pm. No update on weekends.
If our assigned fields are open, or if it’s the weekend, assume that practice or games will go on as scheduled. Any further decision about cancellation will be made at the field and at the event time based on current weather and field conditions. (Remember there are local variations and the fact that storms can move fast.)
In the event of nearby thunder and lightning, we will stop play and take shelter for at least 30 minutes after the last occurrence.
SYC Rugby follows Virginia High School League (VHSL) guidelines to the effect that we cancel activities if the heat index at the time of the activity is 105 degrees or above. Otherwise, we play on, but take appropriate precautions such as liberal breaks and encouragement to drink lots of water.
Spring Season Only
For spring season weekday practices of our "West End" high school and middle school teams: If our FCPA-assigned fields are closed due to weather, practice is still on at a back-up location determined by team coaches (Chili's field or The Ditch).
